Pre-COP 11 Ramsar Regional Meeting for Asia Discusses Future Priorities

6 December 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has reported on the outcomes of the Ramsar Regional Meeting for Asian Contracting Parties, held ahead of the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention.

The meeting took place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 14-18 November 2011, and was hosted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, co-organized with the Ramsar Secretariat, and attended by over 100 participants.

Participants heard presentations and held discussions on: the implementation of the Ramsar Convention across Asia since COP 10 (2008); issues to be discussed during COP 11 (2012); and priorities for the coming triennium. During the meeting, the Ramsar Secretariat signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Centre for Biodiversity. In addition, Mohamed Saif Alafkham, General Director, Fujairah Municipality, United Arab Emirates (UAE), announced the intention of Fujairah Municipality to donate US$50,000 towards developing the first Arabic language wetland management training kit based on guidelines developed by the Ramsar Convention.
