unredd_eu_fao7 May 2015: The Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) announced support from the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) and the European Union (EU) to complete a national forest inventory. Papua New Guinea currently does not have a regular national forest assessment to support policy development.

The initiative, to be implemented through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), will help address increasing threats to forests in PNG including from logging, agriculture and mining. Outcomes from the project will include the survey of about 1,000 forest sites as part of a multi-purpose national forest inventory. Having a comprehensive national forest inventory is an important precondition for results-based payments from REDD+.

The project will be completed by 2017 with a total budget of Euro 7.8 million. [UN-REDD Press Release]
