The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), Tuiloma Neroni Slade, has released the Pacific Plan 2012 Annual Progress Report and its associated Reporting Annex.
The documents highlight challenges faced by the region, and outline progress made towards greater regional integration and cooperation in various areas, including climate change, fisheries, gender equality and disability-inclusive development.
25 January 2013: The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), Tuiloma Neroni Slade, has released the Pacific Plan 2012 Annual Progress Report and its associated Reporting Annex. The documents highlight challenges faced by the region, and outline progress made towards greater regional integration and cooperation in various areas, including climate change, fisheries, gender equality and disability-inclusive development.
The Progress Report, based on progress reports from selected PIFS members and Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP) agencies, begins with an introduction from Slade highlighting the value of the ongoing Pacific Plan review for ensuring the Plan continues to reflect the “aspirations and expectations of Pacific communities.” The report offers a high-level overview of the Plan’s key achievements and challenges to date. It also addresses the role of the Plan in discussions on a post-2015 global development agenda and on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as efforts through the Plan for PIF members to engage with non-State actors.
Launching the documents, Slade cited the Plan’s importance for supporting engagement with the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and preparations for the 2014 Conference on small island developing States (SIDS), as well as post-2015.
The Annex provides further details on the five themes of the Pacific Plan: fostering economic development and promoting opportunities for broad-based growth; improving livelihoods and the well-being of Pacific peoples; addressing the impacts of climate change; achieving stronger national development through better governance; and ensuring improved social, political and legal conditions for stability, safety and security. The Annex also addresses progress on other ongoing Pacific Plan priorities.
The Report contains a section on future activities and priorities, including the 2013 review as endorsed by the Pacific Plan Action Committee (PPAC) in 2012, and further work on a performance framework for the Plan, which was piloted in 2012.
