4 November 2010: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that 20 Philippine cities have joined its “Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready” campaign, at a local government summit in the Philippines.

The Local Government Unit Summit+3i convened under the theme “Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation in the Philippines,” from 4-6 November 2010 in Albay, the Philippines. A key outcome of the Summit was the announcement that Albay province will launch a climate change academy offering capacity building programmes for local government officials on vulnerability to impacts of climate change and the identification of possible adaptation measures at the local level.

The aim of the campaign is to enlist over 1,000 local government leaders to further invest in disaster risk reduction (DRR), including by: improving urban planning, infrastructure and building safety; reinforcing drainage systems to reduce flood, storm and health threats; installing early warning systems; conducting public preparedness drills; and taking measures to adapt to the increasing impacts of climate change.
