Peru Holds NAMAs Workshop
story highlights

The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV held a technical workshop in Peru to help that country formulate Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in the construction, transport and bioenergy sectors.

15 March 2013: Peru’s Environment Ministry (MINAM), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Low-Emission Capacity Building Programme, the German International Cooperation (GIZ) and Ecofys’ Mitigation Momentum Project organized a technical workshop on developing Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) for three sectors and roadmaps for their implementation in Peru.

The National Workshop on Strengthening Capacities in NAMA Design was held from 14-15 March 2013, in Lima, Peru, under the framework of the capacity-building programme of the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV (Measuring, Reporting and Verification).

The first day of the workshop walked participants through the basics of NAMAs, the national context for developing NAMAs in Peru, and the ten steps of a training tool on NAMAs developed by GIZ’s Competence Centre for Climate Change. On the second day, the workshop broke into three sectoral working groups tackling possible NAMAs for construction, transport and bioenergy, with the third group focusing on generating bioenergy from agricultural waste.

The working group sessions included thematic discussions on production and technology, energy and use, financing and markets. Each working group presented its results to the final plenary in terms of opportunities and difficulties identified, activities and responsibilities, and next steps.

The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV was launched within the framework of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in May 2010 in Bonn, Germany, by South Africa, South Korea and Germany. The aim of the Partnership is to support a practical exchange on mitigation-related activities and MRV between developing and developed countries.
