The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) has announced that the UN-REDD National Joint Programme of Panama will resume, following consultations between Panama's National Environmental Authority (ANAM) and the National Coordinating Entity of Indigenous Peoples in Panama (COONAPIP).
10 December 2013: The UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (UN-REDD) has announced that the UN-REDD National Joint Programme of Panama will resume, following consultations between Panama’s National Environmental Authority (ANAM) and the National Coordinating Entity of Indigenous Peoples in Panama (COONAPIP).
The UN-REDD Programme Policy Board congratulated Panama on its progress, and approved a no-cost extension of the country’s National UN-REDD Programme until 2015.
The National UN-REDD Programme had been suspended since March 2013, in response to allegations from COONAPIP that programme activities failed to respect the rights of indigenous people. The Policy Board approved the extension after a full review of the programme’s new results framework and the full agreement of COONAPIP at the Board’s Eleventh Meeting, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 9-10 December 2013. On 29 November 2013, the General Assembly of COONAPIP approved the new results framework as part of an Environmental Agenda, which was developed in extensive consultations with ANAM.
