Pacific SIDS Adopt Nadi Draft Outcome in Preparation for 2014 Conference

The Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) adopted the Nadi Draft Outcome Document, which will represent the Pacific region's contribution to the Inter-regional Preparatory Meeting for the 2014 Conference.

The draft outcome document contains recommendations on, inter alia: climate change; governance; infrastructure; sustainable energy; oceans; sustainable resource management and protection; UN institutional support to SIDS; national priorities and plans; inclusive and sustainable economic management; and means of implementation (MOI) and partnerships.

sids2014p12 July 2013: The Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) adopted the Nadi Draft Outcome Document, which will represent the Pacific region’s contribution to the Inter-regional Preparatory Meeting for the 2014 Conference.

The meeting, held in Nadi, Fiji, from 10-12 July 2013, was the second of three regional meetings in preparation for the Conference, which will take place in Apia, Samoa, in September 2014. Barbados will host the Inter-regional Preparatory Meeting in August 2013.

The draft outcome document, titled “Accelerating Integrated Approach to Sustainable Development,” contains recommendations on: climate change; health, especially non-communicable diseases (NCDs); social development; governance; infrastructure; sustainable energy; oceans; sustainable resource management and protection; UN institutional support to SIDS; national priorities and plans; inclusive and sustainable economic management; and means of implementation (MOI) and partnerships.

Approximately 100 delegates attended the three-day meeting, including representatives of Pacific Island Countries (PICs) from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

American Samoa, Tokelau and New Caledonia attended some sessions of the meeting. Major Group representatives and staff of UN and other intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) attended the open sessions and took part in parallel discussions.

The Pacific meeting was preceded by the Caribbean Regional Preparatory Meeting for the 2014 Conference, held in Kingston, Jamaica, from 2-4 July 2013. The Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and South China Sea (AIMS) regional preparatory meeting takes place in Victoria, Seychelles, from 17-19 July.
