20 February 2009: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized the Pacific ICT Ministerial Forum, titled “Connecting the Unconnected,” which convened in Nukualofa, Tonga, from 17-20 February 2009.

The meeting gathered 13 information and communication technology (ICT) ministers from Pacific Island Countries who issued a joint communiqué calling for, inter alia: greater coordination among partners to minimize overlap and maximize the impact of investments in ICT development projects; the rapid implementation of regional connectivity initiatives and reinforced efforts to build human capacity in ICT; and making full use of ICTs for early warning and response systems to improve disaster preparedness.
