5 July 2010: The 13th meeting of the Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation was held from 5-9 July 2010, in Apia, Samoa, under the theme “Climate Solutions: Invest in Biodiversity.”
Around 100 participants representing nature conservation and development organizations, intergovernmental and donor agencies, Pacific Governments and community groups focused on biodiversity conservation as a key response to climate change. Opening the meeting, Samoa Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Faumuina Tiatia Liuga encouraged participants not only to focus on climate change but also on other environment concerns linked to Pacific cultures and traditions. Taholo Kami, Chair of the Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation and IUCN Oceania Regional Director, noted that climate change challenges Pacific islanders’ livelihoods and conservation efforts. David Sheppard, Director of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), delivered a keynote speech on climate change and natural solutions.
