UNECE14 June 2012: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the World Bank and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), held a workshop to discuss Compact Cities: A Model for Sustainable Urban Development and Green Growth.

The workshop, which took place on 14 June 2012, in Paris, France, provided a platform for participants to discuss joint visions and best practices to promote urban sustainable development, including through joint action across different levels of government and stakeholders and improved spatial planning. The event was based on the recognition of the importance of spatial planning for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in cities. UNECE underlines that such planning is “at the heart” of adaptation and mitigation measures towards climate neutrality.

UNECE presented a new report titled “Climate Neutral Cities – How to Make Cities Less Energy and Carbon Intensive and More Resilient to Climate Change,” which highlights thematic challenges and formulates recommendations to address them, including for: producing low-carbon energy through renewable energy, waste and cogeneration of heat and power; retrofitting existing buildings to be energy-efficient; building new building that are “net-zero” or “plus-energy;” integrated living, working, shopping, entertainment, recreation and green spaces; developing comprehensive bicycle routes; and minimizing waste and increasing recycling.
