25 February 2009: According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), humanitarian needs related to particularly high levels of displacement due to conflict and natural disasters are severe.

During a visit to Colombia, UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes stressed the importance of investing in disaster risk reduction and the likely effects of climate change. He indicated the UN’s interest in working more closely with the Government of Colombia on these issues as well as on natural disaster preparedness and response. Holmes urged international donors to increase humanitarian funding for Colombia in line with the recent increased funding from the Central Emergency Response Fund. [UN Press Release]
