Norway, Germany Support FAO Work on Mitigation in Agriculture
story highlights

A total of US$5 million will support the FAO's Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) programme, which aims to improve information on emissions from agriculture and to assess the mitigation potential of farming approaches.

15 February 2011: The Governments of Norway and Germany have committed a total of US$5 million to support the Mitigation of Climate Change in Agriculture (MICCA) programme of the the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).

The funds will be spent to improve information on emissions from agriculture and to assess the mitigation potential of farming approaches. The data from the programme will help to populate an online knowledge base on agricultural emissions and mitigation opportunities. This work will provide support for “climate-smart” farming practices that improve productivity and resilience. FAO estimates that implementing policies, practices and projects to reduce agricultural emissions could be done at little or no cost, and could, in some cases, improve agricultural productivity.
