Nordic Council LogoAugust 2014: The Nordic Council of Ministers (NORDEN) has published a report, titled ‘Climate change and primary industries: Impacts, adaptation and mitigation in the Nordic countries,’ which focuses on the effects of climate change on the primary Nordic industries, namely agriculture, fishing and forestry.

The report is the result of the research programme ‘Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Mitigation in Nordic Primary Industries,’ which was launched in 2010 as part of the Nordic Council of Ministers globalization initiative. Six Nordic research networks, coordinated by NordForsk, have contributed to the report.

The report consists of 12 main sections, including sections on: climate and climate change in the Nordic countries; emissions and carbon footprint; fisheries; agricultural crops; livestock; forestry; plant and animal health, and food safety; genetic resources; and bioeconomy.

The report is supplemented with a brief report for policy makers under the same title containing information on nine key findings, namely: reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from primary industries entails opportunities and challenges; the Nordic countries are expected to warm at or above the global rate but with large regional variations; the Nordic region, with its dark winters and long summer days, faces particular challenges associated with global warming; forests may experience enhanced carbon uptake under climate change, whereas agricultural soils face losses; climate change will cause spatial shifts in ecosystems and production systems; climate change poses risks to current production systems; climate change offers possibilities for new production systems; climate change poses challenges for current schemes for managing natural resources and the environment; and greater focus on adaptation to climate change is needed.
