Nominations Requested for CBD-CITES Meeting on Bushmeat

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is inviting nominations of country-designated experts for participation in a joint meeting of the CBD's Bushmeat Liaison Group and the Central Africa Bushmeat Working Group of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

17 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is inviting nominations of country-designated experts for participation in a joint meeting of the CBD’s Bushmeat Liaison Group, and the Central Africa Bushmeat Working Group of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The meeting will take place from 6-10 June 2011, in Nairobi, Kenya.

With financial support by the European Commission, the meeting is being convened by the Secretariats of the CBD and CITES, in collaboration with the Great Apes Survival Partnership, led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Also collaborating in the organization of the meeting are the Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) and TRAFFIC – the Wildlife Trade Monitoring Network.

The purpose of the workshop is to: encourage and enable parties and relevant intergovernmental organizations and NGOs to take effective action to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wildlife resources in tropical and sub-tropical forests; develop options for small-scale food and income alternatives in tropical and sub-tropical countries based on the sustainable use of biodiversity; and revise the recommendations of the Liaison Group on Bushmeat.
