story highlights

This campaign calls on governments and international institutions to undertake meaningful reforms and establish open, participatory and inclusive multi-stakeholder processes for setting a post-2015 development agenda at the national and international levels.

It plans to establish working groups to further develop 10 priorities with suggested goals and indicators, and seeks to influence the design of a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

7 November 2012: The UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) has announced the launch of the “Campaign for People’s Goals for Sustainable Development,” which is requesting governments and international institutions to undertake meaningful reforms and establish open, participatory and inclusive multi-stakeholder processes for setting a post-2015 development agenda at the national and international levels.

The initiative, promoted by 16 international and regional networks as well as eight national and local organizations from the global south, was launched in early November 2012 following a global civil society workshop on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) outcomes and the post-2015 development agenda, held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 2-3 October 2012, and organized by IBON International.

The campaign founders also issued a declaration calling for a transformative development agenda, based on the concepts of “living well” and “harmony with nature,” as opposed to an economic system that emphasizes growth in production and consumption of material goods, and excludes people from decision making about their lives and future. The declaration identifies as priorities, inter alia: climate justice and environmental sustainability; and democracy and good governance; poverty and equality; gender justice; and monetary and financial architecture.

The campaign plans to establish working groups to further develop the 10 priorities with suggested goals and indicators, and seeks to influence the design of a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among other processes. [NGLS Press Release] [Declaration]
