Next UNFCCC Adaptation Forum to Address Integration of Adaptation with SDGs, LAKI Advances Adaptation Knowledge in North Africa

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a subregional coordination entity for North Africa, in collaboration with the UNFCCC and UN Environment (UNEP), organized the sixth LAKI priority-setting workshop for the North Africa subregion.

22 September 2017: The UNFCCC Adaptation Committee convened for its twelfth meeting (AC 12) in preparation for the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 23) to the UNFCCC, taking place in Bonn, Germany, from 6-17 November 2017. The sixth priority-setting workshop for North Africa sought to advance the Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI).

AC 12 took place in Bonn, Germany, from 19-22 September 2017. Committee members considered, among other issues: the AC’s recent collaboration with other adaptation-related institutional arrangements under the Convention, including the Task Force on Displacement established by the Executive Committee (ExCom) of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage associated with Climate Change Impacts (WIM); and support for implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change, including through reviewing adaptation-related institutional arrangements under the Convention in 2017, and considering methodologies for assessing adaptation needs with a view to assisting developing countries, without placing an undue burden on them.

The AC agreed that the topic of the next Adaptation Forum will be ‘Integrating climate change adaptation with the SDGs and the Sendai Framework for DRR.

The AC agreed that the topic of the next Adaptation Forum will be ‘Integrating climate change adaptation with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR),’ noting that this topic accommodates other focus areas, such as the perspective of small islands and long-term adaptation planning.

The AC also addressed, inter alia: modalities to recognize the adaptation efforts of developing countries; methodologies to facilitate the mobilization of support for adaptation in developing countries; methodologies for reviewing the adequacy and effectiveness of adaptation and support; the work of the AC’s working group on the Technical Examination Process on Adaptation (TEP-A); and technical support and guidance to the Parties on adaptation action and means of implementation. Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a subregional coordination entity for North Africa, in collaboration with the UNFCCC and UN Environment (UNEP), organized the sixth LAKI priority-setting workshop for the North Africa subregion in Alexandria, Egypt, from 19-21 September 2017. The subregion covers Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.
