Nagoya Protocol Reaches 34 Ratifications

Guyana, Hungary, Kenya and Viet Nam ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) in April 2014, followed by Denmark, which ratified on 1 May 2014, bringing the total number ratifications to 34.

CBD1 May 2014: Guyana, Hungary, Kenya and Viet Nam ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) in April 2014, followed by Denmark, which ratified on 1 May 2014, bringing the total number ratifications to 34.

“These ratifications…suggest the momentum is rapidly building towards entry into force of the Nagoya Protocol in time for the twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 12),” said Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Nagoya Protocol will enter into force 90 days after the deposit of the 50th instrument of ratification.

The deadline for ratifications, so that the first Meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol can be held concurrently with CBD COP 12, is 7 July 2014. [CBD Press Release][List of Signatures and Ratifications]
