CBD9 September 2016: The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reached 85 ratifications, in anticipation of the second Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol to be held in December 2016, and the goal to reach 100 ratifications by then.

The Czech Republic and Zambia ratified the Protocol in May 2016; China and Finland in June 2016; and Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Mali, the Netherlands, the Republic of Moldova and Sweden ratified in August and September 2016. “By reaching this goal [of 100 ratifications] the international community will demonstrate its support to the Nagoya Protocol and to making it a reality on the ground. Implementation of the Nagoya Protocol will also contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including Target 2.5 on food security,” said CBD Executive Secretary Braulio Dias.

The Nagoya Protocol on ABS establishes predictable conditions for access to genetic resources and traditional knowledge and helps ensure the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from their utilization. It entered into force on 12 October 2014. The second Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol will be held from 4-17 December 2016, in Cancún, Mexico, concurrently with the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD.
