30 November 2011: A workshop convened by Monaco on the “Sustainable Use of Oceans in the Context of the Green Economy and Poverty Eradication” focused on sustainability practices in food security, renewable energy and tourism. The workshop aimed to contribute to the outcome document of the UN Conference for Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The workshop concluded with the adoption of the Monaco Message.

The workshop, which took place in Monaco, from 28-30 November 2011, sought to give oceans due consideration in the Rio+20 process. The event was organized by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, and brought together 65 experts, including the co-Chairs of the UNCSD Bureau and the Conference’s Executive Coordinators.

Participants stressed the need to reduce illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing, promote sustainable aquaculture and sustainable fisheries, adopt an ecosystem approach to fisheries management, and end destructive fishing practices. Participants also underlined the importance of sustainable tourism, noting the need for it to adhere to UN principles of human rights.

In the Monaco Message, participants reiterate their commitment to the green economy and poverty eradication and call for the establishment of Sustainable Development Goals integrated with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) into a single post 2015 framework. They stress that one of those goals should be focused on the sustainable development of the oceans, and the importance of the blue economy.
