16 July 2013: Modalities for the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Special Event to follow up on efforts made towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to be held in its 68th session, have been announced. UNGA President Vuk Jeremic conveyed the modalities in a letter to Member States on 16 July 2013.
The one-day event will take place on 25 September 2013, and consist of opening and closing plenaries as well as four high-level, multi-stakeholder roundtable discussions. All four roundtable sessions will have the same broad focus on gaps, weaknesses and acceleration of efforts towards the MDGs, while also looking forward to the post-2015 development agenda. The proceedings will be governed by the UNGA’s rules of procedure, and the opening of the event will allow a limited number of statements by representatives of Member States, Observer States, Observers and other stakeholders.
The co-facilitators for the process, Ambassador Anne Anderson (Ireland) and Ambassador Kingsley Mamabolo (South Africa), continued to hold consultations with Member States on other elements of the Special Event. [Letter from UNGA President]
