November 2012: The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV (Measuring, Reporting and Verification) has released the second edition of its quarterly Mitigation Newsletter. The October 2012 newsletter features the Partnership’s first Autumn School on MRV, as well as a review of capacity-building workshops in Chile, Thailand and Costa Rica.

High-level representatives from developing and developed countries participated in the Autumn School, “MRV – Today, Tomorrow, and the Future,” held in Berlin, Germany, from 15-23 October 2012. The program aimed to empower participants to implement national processes for institutionalizing MRV systems in their home countries. Participants concluded that a functioning MRV system should build on existing elements, data and methods, particularly in regard to NAMA implementation. The main outcomes of the Autumn School will be presented in the next Partnership meeting, held alongside the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC, in Doha, Qatar.

The newsletter also: reviews national and local-level progress on mitigation plans and actions in Colombia, South Africa and Indonesia; and presents new projects on capacity building for emissions trading in China, capacity development for greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and MRV in Tunisia, and efforts to pilot bankable vertically integrated NAMA (V-NAMA) proposals for waste management and public buildings in Indonesia and South Africa.

The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV was launched within the framework of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in May 2010, in Bonn, Germany, by Germany, the Republic of Korea and South Africa. It aims to support practical exchange on mitigation-related activities and MRV between developing and developed countries.
