A World Bank-funded project to replace incandescent light-bulbs in Mexico entered the Guinness Book of Records for having distributed 22.9 million compact fluorescent energy-saving light bulbs.
The program installed more than 1,110 stations to exchange light bulbs throughout the country, thereby saving 1,400 gigawatt hour (Gwh) and avoiding 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
1 August 2012: Mexico’s “Sustainable Light” program has been accepted into the Guinness Book of Records for having distributed 22.9 million compact fluorescent energy-saving light bulbs.
The program, partly financed by the World Bank, installed more than 1,110 stations to exchange light bulbs throughout the country, thereby saving 1,400 gigawatt hour (Gwh) and avoiding 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The new light bulbs also allow families to save up to 18% on their electricity bills. The next stage of the project plans to replace another 23 million incandescent light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. It is estimated that this will incur savings of 2,800 Gwh.
