Consultations for the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Region, held in preparation for the 58th UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 58) have concluded with adoption of the Mexico Declaration.
The Declaration includes recommendations for including gender in the post-2015 development agenda through a stand-alone goal on gender equality, women's rights, and women's empowerment.
11 February 2014: Consultations for the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Region, held in preparation for the 58th UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 58), have concluded with adoption of the Mexico Declaration. The Declaration includes recommendations for including gender in the post-2015 development agenda through a stand-alone goal on gender equality, women’s rights, and women’s empowerment.
The consultations took place on 7 February 2014, in Mexico City, Mexico. Addressing the meeting, John Hendra, UN Women, said the region’s commitment to and engagement with the issues is reinforced in the Declaration.
In addition to its calls for a stand-alone goal, the Mexico Declaration proposes that gender equality be mainstreamed throughout the post-2015 development agenda, including with specific reference to sexual and reproductive rights and unequal power relations between men and women. The Declaration emphasizes that all new development goals must: be transformative; tackle structural barriers to sustainable development; apply to all countries universally; and address equality through a rights-based approach.
The Declaration also calls for the post-2015 development agenda to be relevant to small island developing States (SIDS) and middle-income countries. [UN Women Press Release] [CSW 58 Website]
