Mercury Secretariat Hosts Francophone Workshops for Ratification, Early Implementation

The Minamata Convention on Mercury Secretariat, together with the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre in Senegal, hosted two subregional Francophone workshops in Dakar, Senegal, focused on the ratification and early implementation of the Minamata Convention.

minamata-mercuryJuly 2014: The Minamata Convention on Mercury Secretariat, together with the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre in Senegal, hosted two subregional Francophone workshops in Dakar, Senegal, focused on the ratification and early implementation of the Minamata Convention.

The workshops were convened in accordance with the resolution on arrangements taken by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Kumamoto, Japan, in October 2013, supporting ratification and early implementation. The workshops focused on: emissions and releases; artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM); supply sources, trade and storage of mercury; waste and contaminated sites; mercury-added products and manufacturing processes in which mercury is used; and health aspects.

Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Gabon, Madagascar, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe participated in the first workshop, which convened from 9-11 July. Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, Togo, Tunisia participated in the second workshop, which convened from 14-16 July.
