RIO+20April 2012: UN Member States, UN system and other intergovernmental organizations, and Major Groups have been invited to register their partnerships and share their preparatory work towards the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

Partnerships are voluntary, multi-stakeholder initiatives that are linked to the implementation of globally agreed commitments in the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) (Johannesburg Plan of Implementation), Agenda 21 and/or the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21. They do not substitute for government responsibilities and commitments, but facilitate, strengthen and expedite implementation.

In addition, stakeholders have been invited to register for the Partnerships Forum at Rio+20. The Partnerships Forum, to be held from 20-22 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will consist of sessions showcasing the contributions of partnerships to the implementation of sustainable development. The goal of the Forum is to build on the mandate agreed at the 11th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 11) and to “reenergize, revitalize and strengthen” partnerships to make them more effective and accountable vehicles for implementation. Sessions will: showcase best practices; discuss how partnerships can advance the implementation of the agreements reached at Rio+20; identify successful models and opportunities for replication and scale up; and promote discussions on more effective accountability measures.
