Maldives Adopts DRR and Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan

Development of the Maldives' Strategic National Action Plan (SNAP), which integrates disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation, was supported by UN/ISDR and is guided by both the Hyogo Framework of Action and the objectives of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

24 June 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that the Government of the Maldives has endorsed its Strategic National Action Plan (SNAP), which integrates disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation. According to UN/ISDR, the Maldives’ SNAP represents a world first in integrated approaches to DRR and climate change adaptation.

Development of the Maldives’ SNAP was supported by UN/ISDR, and is guided by both the Hyogo Framework of Action and the objectives of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

According to UN/ISDR, the Maldives’ SNAP builds on lessons learned from past disasters and promotes good governance, empowerment of local communities, building resilience, and risk sensitive regional and local development. SNAP Maldives also focuses on aspects of governance and decentralisation as key elements for successful DRR and climate change adaptation. [UN/ISDR Press Release]
