nap-unfccc7 November 2014: Under the auspices of the UNFCCC Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG), nine Pacific Island countries gathered for a five-day workshop aimed at launching a process for medium- and long-term adaptation planning. The meeting was held in collaboration with UN Development Programme (UNDP)/UN Environment Programme (UNEP) National Adaptation Plan Global Support Programme (NAP-GSP), which supports developing countries in creating and implementing NAPs.

The Government of Vanuatu hosted the meeting, which took place from 3-7 November 2014. Other participating countries were the Cook Islands, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu. The workshop focused on assisting these small island developing States (SIDS) in formulating and implementing NAPs. A series of presentations and sessions led by both regional and international experts introduced the NAP process, explained how to incorporate adaptation into national and regional planning, and informed participants of resources available to them in the process, such as from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) and NAP-GSP.

Speaking at the event, Diane Araki, Head of UN Joint Presence Office in Vanuatu, explained that the “NAP process provides an opportunity for countries to forge greater alignment between climate initiatives and ongoing longer term planning frameworks, as well as more institutional integration and coordination.” In addition to the discussions held throughout the week, a field trip was organized to an adaptation project site in Vanuatu.
