The Fifth Latin American Regional Dialogue of the Mitigation Action Implementation Network (MAIN), sponsored by the Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP) and hosted by the Peruvian Ministry of Environment, focused specifically on the waste and clean energy (renewable energy and energy efficiency) sectors.
23 August 2013: The Fifth Latin American Regional Dialogue of the Mitigation Action Implementation Network (MAIN), sponsored by the Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP) and hosted by the Peruvian Ministry of Environment, focused specifically on the waste and clean energy (renewable energy and energy efficiency) sectors.
The dialogue, which convened from 23-25 July 2013, in Lima, Peru, included: interventions by sectoral and finance experts, roundtable policy discussions, and interactive breakout sessions that addressed sectoral barriers and options for overcoming them; and presentations of promising developing country nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) in the waste and clean energy sectors. It also provided contributing countries and representatives of financial institutions an opportunity to learn about evolving waste and clean energy actions in participant countries.
Specific topics addressed included: the role of NAMA finance in attracting low-carbon investment; the Germany/UK International NAMA Facility; the role of NAMAs in developing and implementing national climate goals; addressing barriers to mitigation in the waste sector; addressing private sector stakeholder concerns in transforming the waste sector; considering a comprehensive waste NAMA; MAIN country NAMAs in the waste sector; creating an effective policy framework in clean energy; and financial mechanisms in renewable energy and energy efficiency programmes.
CCAP’s MAIN initiative works to identify and highlight the most successful developing country mitigation policies and uses these lessons to assist other countries in refining their policies and implementation frameworks in order to achieve ambitious mitigation actions. The MAIN dialogues help finance officials better understand the challenges faced in NAMA development and how funding can best support effective developing country policy outcomes.
