President Sarkozy welcoming Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh with Messrs Barroso and Jean Claude Gaudin, senator and mayor of Marseille 29 September 2008: During the ninth Indo-EU summit, which took place on 29 September 2008, in Marseille, France, India and the EU agreed to expand their cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and environmental protection. They also reviewed the 2006 Joint Action Plan and agreed to add
several new areas of cooperation, including in the field of exploitation of solar energy in India and civil nuclear research and development including in fusion energy.

Addressing a joint press conference at the end of the summit, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh explained that the two sides had discussed various issues related to energy and food security, and climate change, and launched a Joint Working Programme on energy, clean development and climate change. The Programme aims to facilitate collaboration between the two in the field of clean coal technologies, energy efficiency, renewable energy, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and financing and transfer of climate-friendly technologies.
