22 August 2013: The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV has reported that the Government of Japan has developed the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), an initiative aimed at facilitating the diffusion of advanced low carbon technologies, products, systems, services and infrastructures.

The JCM was initiated in collaboration with seven partner countries, namely Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mongolia, Maldives, Viet Nam and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The JCM intends to be implemented ensuring strong methodologies and environmental integrity, while being a practical mechanism based on rules and guidelines developed by its Joint Committee. Moreover, the JCM aims at facilitating global action for greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions or removals, complementing the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

Capacity building is one of the JCM’s key components, and for the purpose of knowledge sharing, the Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center established the New Mechanisms Information Platform website.

The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV was launched within the framework of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in May 2010 in Bonn, Germany, by South Africa, South Korea and Germany.
