story highlights

This issue highlights the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) work on strengthening relations with the private sector.

It also features the agreement reached at a recent high-level conference held in European Parliament, on the need for an inclusive and equitable green economy roadmap.

May 2012: The latest issue of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) European Newsletter highlights the organization’s new Business Engagement Strategy and discusses unsustainable use of natural resources in the Caucasus, among other topics. The Newsletter is a quarterly update on the activities of IUCN and its Members in Europe.

In the editorial for this issue, Hans Friederich, IUCN Regional Director for Europe, highlights IUCN’s new Business Engagement Strategy, which aims to strengthen relations with the private sector including through support for business leaders who are committed to transformational changes.

The newsletter also features a summary of the high-level conference, “towards Rio+20,” chaired by MEP Vittorio Prodi at the European Parliament, on 24 April 2012. Conference participants agreed on the need for an inclusive and equitable green economy roadmap.

In addition, the newsletter explores how unsustainable uses of natural resources in the Caucasus are driven by a disconnected relationship between nature, economic development, and human wellbeing, as well as an insufficient recognition of the value of biodiversity from policy makers, businesses and society.
