© ITU5 June 2009: The International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Study Group on Environment and Climate Change held its first meeting under its new name and mandate, from 25-29 May 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Group was established by the ITU during the meeting of its Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG), held from 28-30 April 2009, to focus on information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the environment. The Study Group has started work on turning the deliverables of the ITU Focus Group on ICTs and Climate Change into ITU-T recommendations, particularly work on standardized methodologies for calculating the climate change impact of ICTs.
A new Working Party dealing with ICTs and Climate Change has also been established under the Study Group. The Study Group also accepted a request from the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) Association (GSMA) to support its work on a Universal Charging Solution (UCS), and will work on adopting the solution as an ITU-T Recommendation. The UCS proposal is for an energy-efficient one-charger-fits-all new mobile phone solution, which the GSMA estimates will result in a 50% reduction in standby energy consumption, the elimination of 51,000 tons of duplicate chargers, and a reduction of 13.6 million tons in greenhouse gas emissions each year.
