September 2012: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has released a report titled “Review of Mobile Handset Eco-Rating Schemes,” which presents an overview of eco-rating schemes developed and used by the mobile phone industry to communicate the sustainability performance of their products to consumers.

The report concludes that there is no single scheme that can be considered a perfect view of sustainability. It identifies elements that schemes should consider as best practices and suggests these be integrated into a single scheme to simplify the process for consumers, mobile operators and manufacturers.

The report was launched at the second ITU Green Standards Week held in Paris, France, from 17-21 September 2012. [Publication: Review of Mobile Handset Eco-Rating Schemes] [IISD RS Story on the Second ITU Green Standards Week]
