ITTC Approves Biennial Work Programme, Modest Budget Increase

Delegates at the 47th session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) and meetings of its associated committees reflected on recent shifts in the worldwide patterns of imports, and on the Organization's links to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Chair Bilé Joachim Allogho bringing the 47th Session of ITTC to a close at 1:27 pm. 19 November 2011: The 47th session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) and meetings of its associated committees concluded with the adoption of a decision on the Biennial Work Programme 2012-2013, as well as the approval of funding for a series of projects, pre-projects and activities.

The meeting convened in Antigua, Guatemala, from 14-19 November 2011. Delegates whittled the proposed 2012 administrative budget down from an increase of 12.55% over the 2011 budget, to an increase of 3.95%. The Council also reviewed the status of the deposit of instruments of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession to the International Tropical Timber Agreement (ITTA) 2006, and considered the transition to move to this Agreement. ITTA, 2006 is expected to go into force in 2012, with only 12 accessions still needed to reach the threshold.

Delegates reflected on recent shifts in the worldwide patterns of imports, and on the Organization’s links to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The 45th sessions of the Committees on Economic Information and Market Intelligence, Forest Industry, and Reforestation and Forest Management also met to approve projects and pre-projects, review projects and pre-projects under implementation and ex-post evaluations, and conduct policy work. The 26th session of the Committee on Finance and Administration also met to discuss, inter alia, the administrative budget for 2012, the current status of the Administrative Account, and resources of the Special Account and the Bali Partnership Fund.
