4 July 2012: During the 11th World Wind Energy Conference (WWEC 2012), which took place in Bonn, Germany, from 3-5 July 2012, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) organized a side event on the Renewable Energy Learning Partnership (IRELP), in collaboration with the University of York, UK, the Sustainable Energy Initiative (SEI), and the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA).
IRELP was developed as a portal to facilitate the global development of education and training in renewable energy, in response to the rising demand for knowledge and a skilled workforce. It was launched in April 2012 during the third Clean Energy Ministerial in London, UK. According to IRENA, the first IRELP phase comprises a global education and training database and a library of renewable energy training materials. Accroding to IRENA, during the WWEC side event participants affirmed the benefits of encouraging interaction between the renewable energy industry and the education sector. Discussions focused on: the importance of education for accelerating renewable energy deployment; the identification of gaps in education; opportunities from the academic perspective; and the demand and supply of renewable energy curricula.
