IRENA-ECN MOU Promotes Sustainable Energy Future
story highlights

The agreement between IRENA and ECN aims to support sustainable energy through collaboration on commercialization of renewable energy technologies, renewable energy policy, systems analysis and technological innovation systems as potential areas of collaboration.

The two organizations also intend to collaborate to promote technological development through adaptation and transfer, technology research and techno-economic outlooks.

IRENA24 July 2012: The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate the transition towards a sustainable energy future. The MOU identifies commercialization of renewable energy technologies, renewable energy policy, systems analysis and technological innovation systems as potential areas of collaboration.

To accelerate global deployment of renewable energy technologies, increased technology is needed at a commercially competitive level, IRENA notes. IRENA and ECN will collaborate to facilitate such technological development through adaptation and transfer, technology research and techno-economic outlooks identifying specific options.

Adnan Amin, IRENA’s Director-General, said “one of IRENA’s roles is to be the global hub for [renewable energy] actors and their activities; to create an inclusive platform that will facilitate global cooperation in renewable energy knowledge and technology.” He described IRENA’s partnership with ECN is “a natural step towards achieving this.” Paul Korting, ECN’s CEO, said “ECN has much experience advising government on energy policy issues and working with the private sector… for commercializing renewable energy technology. Our co-operation with IRENA will help both organizations to become more successful.” [IRENA Press Release]
