IPI Roundtable Calls for Coherence and Cooperation in International Environmental Governance
story highlights

The meeting included discussions on the challenges for international environmental governance, system-wide frameworks and strategic engagement at the regional and country levels.

The report highlights that international environmental governance reforms should build on existing successful examples of coherence, coordination and consolidation, and should design solutions that support national strategies.

12 June 2012: The International Peace Institute has published the report of its roundtable discussion on reform options for international environmental governance, which highlights, among other things, the need for coherence and cooperation within the UN system.

The meeting, which was held on 14 December 2011, in New York, US, featured discussions on the current challenges for international environmental governance, system-wide frameworks and strategic engagement at the regional and country levels. The report highlights that international environmental governance reforms should build on existing successful examples of coherence, coordination and consolidation, and should design solutions that support national strategies.

It also underlines that: the proliferation of multilateral environmental agreements has created opportunities for synergies among conventions; these conventions must consider the national-level context in order to ensure effective implementation; and joint agency coordination is possible and has already been successfully implemented in some cases.
