IPCC Working Group on Mitigation Gathers to Prepare Next Assessment Report

Experts from 56 countries met from 5-9 November 2012 in Vigo, Spain, to work on the next Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) on Climate Change.

The gathering of the Third Lead Authors Meeting (LAM3) involved the participation of 281 lead authors and review editors and focused on discussing the comments from the first round expert review.

IPCC9 November 2012: Experts from 56 countries met from 5-9 November 2012, in Vigo, Spain, to work on the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on Climate Change. The IPCC’s Working Group III focus its work on mitigation aspects.

The gathering of the Third Lead Authors Meeting (LAM3) involved the participation of 281 lead authors and review editors. The IPCC’s Working Group III meeting held in Spain is the third of four meetings, and was preceded by gatherings in South Korea (July 2011) and New Zealand (March 2012). The process for the development of the report involves three rounds of formal review before its submission for acceptance. In Vigo, authors discussed the comments from the first round expert review, which involved more than 16,000 comments.

The Working Group III contribution of the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) will consist of 16 chapters and will be released in 2014. It will address all sectors involved in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Pichs-Madruga, Centro de Investigaciones de la Economía Mundial, indicated that this report will devote particular attention to the analysis of socio-economic aspects of climate change and to their implications for sustainable development and risk management, including regional issues.
