1 February 2010: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued its first newsletter. The January issue begins with a message from IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri, in which he reflects on the Panel’s work in January related to the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). Chair Pachauri also notes recent media developments around the IPCC, but expresses belief “that the truth will prevail and the mal-intent of those who are behind the falsehoods that are being produced in the media would be exposed.”
The IPCC newsletter elaborates on the Panel’s work on the AR5, in particular on the schedule of work for 2010, nomination of authors, and themes to be addressed in the report. Other topics include updates on the preparation of the two Special Reports – on extreme events and disasters, and on renewable energy – and on current activities of the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. The newsletter also draws readers’ attention to IPCC statements on hacking of the East Anglia University email communications, the melting of the Himalayan glaciers and trends in disaster losses.
