28 June 2011: Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has briefed the press on the Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation (SRREN), which was agreed upon and released by the IPCC during its 33rd plenary session held in May 2011 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

At the 28 June 2011 briefing at UN Headquarters in New York, US, Pachauri discussed the SRREN, which focuses on six energy sources: bioenergy; direct solar energy; geothermal energy; hydropower; ocean energy; and wind energy. The chapters cover in depth discussions of resource and technologies following a structure that covers resource potential, market and industry development status, environmental and social impacts, cost trends, and potential deployment. It also addresses the integration of renewable energies into current and future energy systems, mitigation potential and costs and policy, financing and implementation issues.
