IPCC27 October 2014: The 40th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-40) opened at the Tivoli Conference Center in Copenhagen, Denmark, to consider and finalize the Synthesis Report (SYR), which integrates and synthesizes the findings from the three working group reports that comprise the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). The Panel is expected to approve, line by line, the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) and adopt the longer SYR section by section. More than 800 authors and review editors from 85 countries have participated in the preparation of AR5 over the past six years.

The opening session heard statements by Rasmus Helveg Petersen, Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Denmark, Kirsten Brosbøl, Minister of the Environment, Denmark, Frank Jensen, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Jeremiah Lengoasa, Deputy Secretary-General, WMO, John Christensen, on behalf of UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner, IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres. In his opening statement, Chair Pachauri asked policymakers “avoid being overcome by the seeming hopelessness of addressing climate change,” adding that “it is not hopeless.” Participants then began to discuss the SPM, line by line, addressing the introduction and the section on observed changes and their causes.

In addition to approving the SPM and adopting the SYR, IPCC-40, which is meeting from 27-31 October 2014, will address, inter alia: the IPCC programme and budget through 2017; future work of the IPCC; communication and outreach activities; a request for a technical report on climate change, food and agriculture; and implementation of the IPCC conflict of interest policy.

IPCC-40 was preceded by the third meeting of the Task Force on the Future Work of the IPCC on 26 October, which considered, among other things, the refined Options Paper prepared by the Task Group Co-Chairs. On 24 and 25 October, the Core Write Team (CWT) for the SYR convened. [IPCC Press Release] [IISDRS Coverage of IPCC-40] [IPCC-40 Documents] [IPCC Press Release]
