story highlights

A revised document on the work programme of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has been circulated for comment by 15 December 2011.

By 15 January 2012, governments may submit proposals to host the IPBES Secretariat, for consideration at the second session.

October 2011: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has issued its revised work programme for comment, and announced additional dates related to the intersessional process for the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

The first session of the plenary meeting to determine modalities and institutional arrangements for IPBES took place in October 2011, during which it was agreed to work intersessionally on the work programme of the platform and the issue of membership.

On the work programme, a revised document was developed by the UNEP Secretariat based on comments received during the first session. It is now available online, and comments received by 15 December 2011 will be compiled and reflected in an updated version for the second session of a plenary meeting on IPBES.

Other key dates in the intersessional process are as follows. By 15 December 2011, parties may submit proposals on the rules of procedure and related procedures, for dissemination by UNEP at the plenary’s second session. By 15 January 2012, governments may submit proposals to host the IPBES Secretariat, also for consideration at the second session. By six weeks ahead of the second session of the plenary, the Chair of the plenary meeting Bureau will circulate the proposals to participants.

The date and location of the second session have not been set. [IPBES Announcement] [Revised Elements of Work Programme]
