28 September 2012: The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has issued a guidance note on selecting Officers of the Bureau and members of the Multidisciplinary Expert Platform (MEP), ahead of the forthcoming First Plenary (IPBES 1). According to the note, the process to be followed for the nomination and selection of Bureau members has three stages: proposals from countries, consideration and nominations by regions, and selection by the Plenary.

For the selection of MEP members, meanwhile, the five UN regions are each requested to agree on their five regional nominations, taking the opportunity of informal consultations, and the regional consultations anticipated on 20 January 2013, the day prior to IPBES 1. The regions then will present their MEP nominations to the Plenary on 21 January 2013, unless the Plenary decides otherwise. [IPBES Press Release]
