31 August 2017: The Climate & Development Knowledge Network and partners have recently issued a report on managing disaster risks in a changing climate, while the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office in Juba, South Sudan, has reported on a project that helps to build capacity for mainstreaming disaster risk management (DRM) into national and sectorial development plans.

A synthesis report from the Raising Risk Awareness project titled, ‘Building capacity for risk management in a changing climate,’ summarizes the project’s activities and stakeholders’ responses. The report explains why extreme event attribution is important for managing climate risk, and elaborates on ways to understand and apply extreme event attribution results. The publication also addresses how to communicate extreme event attribution effectively and ways to build extreme event attribution capacity.

The Raising Risk Awareness project aimed to share, and raise awareness of, extreme event attribution analyses with a range of stakeholders in Ethiopia, India and Kenya. The projects also sought to help to address potential science-communications-policy gaps associated with extreme event attribution and sea level rise risk in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India and Kenya. The UNESCO Juba office is supporting mainstreaming DRM in national development plans by building capacity in disaster risk reduction (DRR). The project’s implementation includes knowledge generation, building technical and institutional capacity, and advocacy to enhance collective awareness and response to natural hazards aggravated by climate change.
