The High-Level Dialogue on the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development, organized by the Rio+20 Secretariat and Indonesia, sought to to facilitate open, high-level discussions on options for strengthening IFSD, with a view to contributing towards the formulation of concrete proposals that could be taken up for consideration and possible adoption at Rio+20.
21 July 2011: The High-Level Dialogue on the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development (IFSD) has concluded with a call for integration, implementation and greater coordination and coherence among international and regional institutions, in order to strengthen IFSD.
The Dialogue, which was organized by the Secretariat of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) and Indonesia, was held from 19-21 July 2011, in Solo, Indonesia, to facilitate open, high-level discussions on options for strengthening IFSD, with a view to contributing towards the formulation of concrete proposals that could be taken up for consideration and possible adoption at Rio+20.
Speaking at the close of the Dialogue, Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and UNCSD Secretary-General, highlighted some of the proposals emerging from the Dialogue, including: the need to strengthen the environmental pillar of sustainable development while at the same time reinforcing the economic and social pillars and achieving greater balance among the three; the creation of a world environmental organization; and the formation of a sustainable development council.
The outcome of the Dialogue will be summarized in a report prepared by the host Government with the support of the UNCSD Secretariat, formulating concrete proposals that could be taken up for consideration and possible adoption at the UNCSD.
