22 November 2010: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has produced a 10-minute film titled “Heat, rain and livestock: Impacts of climate change on Africa’s livestock herders,” which demonstrates how ILRI is applying research to help communities cope with the effects of climate change.

The film showcases the research-based options for climate change adaptation that ILRI is examining, including: using satellite imagery to provide drought insurance for pastoral herders; cross-breeding red Masaai sheep, which are resistant to infections from gastro-intestinal worms, with higher producing exotic sheep; helping communities to shift from grazing animals, like cattle and sheep, to browsers, like camels and goats; and supporting alternative livelihoods like raising fish in ponds.
