IGAD, UN Agencies Release Communiqué on Drought Resilience in the Horn of Africa

Intergovernmental Authority on Development Ministers and High-Level UN agency representatives released a communiqué from the joint meeting on drought resilience in the Horn of Africa.

The Communiqué calls upon UN Agencies to support IGAD in establishing a regional early warning system linked to mechanisms for readily response to drought emergencies, and on the UN to initiate cross-border programmes in support of the IGAD regional agenda.

17 May 2012: Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Ministers and High-Level UN Agency Representatives released a communiqué from the Joint IGAD Ministerial and High-Level UN Agencies meeting on drought resilience in the Horn of Africa, which convened in Djibouti, Djibouti. The meeting objective was to identify ways to engage UN agencies in the ongoing drought resilience initiatives carried out by lGAD and its member States.

Among other things, the communiqué: strongly urges the IGAD Secretariat to expedite the operationalisation of the Regional Drought Resilience Platform; urges UN Agencies, IGAD and member States to institutionalize best practices and lessons learned for prioritizing long-term multi-sectoral and holistic investments; and reaffirms the commitment of IGAD, member States and UN Agencies, to the implementation of the Horn of Africa Drought Resilience Initiative.
