February 2010: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), has released a review of 17 studies on practices that boost small-scale farmers’ resilience to climate change, highlighting the experiences of, and lessons for, African farmers.

The review notes that African farmers are already implementing practices to cope with climate risk, and that these may be improved with the aid of planned adaptation programmes. The review identified 104 adaptation practices and organized them into five categories: farm management and technology; financial management; diversification; government interventions in infrastructure, health and risk reduction; and knowledge management, network and governance. The analysis highlights several policy options, including the development of new drought-resistant crops and improved weather forecasts, provision of financial services, improvement of rural transportation infrastructure, investments in public healthcare and public welfare programmes, and implementation of policies to enhance good local governance and coordinate donor activities.
