Degradation1The Thirty-first Governing Council Session of the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) focused on challenges and opportunities for smallholder farmers in the context of climate change and new demands on agricultural production, including the rising cost of commodities.

The session ended on 14 February 2008, in Rome, Italy, with its 164 member countries adopting a policy strategy to address the worsening world food security problem and calling for further investments in agriculture to support poor rural farmers. Some member countries called for measures to ease the burden on rural poor, such as reducing transportation costs of produce, establishment of safety nets, and research and microcredit initiatives to boost agricultural production.
