24 April 2013: The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) have produced a report detailing the relevance, status, costs and policies for carbon capture and storage (CCS) in industrial applications.

The report calls on policy makers to place greater emphasis on the demonstration of low-cost deployment of CCS in iron, steel, cement and other energy-intensive industries, which currently contribute one-fifth of global carbon dioxide emissions.

IEA and CCSA prepared the report, titled “Global Action to Advance Carbon Capture and Storage: A Focus on Industrial Applications,” for the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Carbon Capture, Use and Storage (CCUS) Action Group. The Association presented the report’s findings and recommendations to energy ministers and Heads of delegation at the Fourth CEM, which took place in New Delhi, India, from 17-18 April 2013.

Key recommendations for development, demonstration, and deployment of industrial CCS include the public funding of ten pilot and demonstration-scale projects, prioritized by their contribution to knowledge rather than short-term emission reductions. Further recommendations call for the creation of a deployment-conducive policy environment that incorporates CCS into industrial strategies, and the exploitation of cross-sector synergies to reduce costs.
